The SHIFT Approach To Weight Management

Read how SHIFT Weight Management Associates is one of the first organization in Canada to embrace the new Obesity Management Guidelines, our use of CBT and our Group Moda Program and Individual Moda Sessions.

Canada's new Obesity Guidelines and CBT for Weight Loss & Management

Proven & Effective Techniques

Your physician has a new set of guidelines to manage your weight and Shift Weight Management Associates is one of the first in Canada to support those guidelines.

Specifically, the guidelines place more importance on CBT Interventions and less importance on "move more and eat less". Instead the focus is on defining your values and your own definition of weight success using CBT tools and techniques.

CBT examines your thoughts, and encourages behaviour change by adapting your thinking. When used for those who want to manage their weight, CBT interventions are straight-forward and effective. Brian Baumal, our Registered Psychotherapist has taken the Beck Institute's CBT for Weight Loss in August 2020, and Tony Vassallo our Culinary Nutritionist has been running the CBT-Based Moda Nutrition program for over five years.

MODA Individual CBT Sessions

For Those Who Need More One-on-One Support

MODA individual support puts you and Tony Vassallo directly in touch where he uses the Beck Institute's CBT program to guide you through weight loss and management principles. You will learn your unconscious sabotaging triggers and thoughts and how to reframe them to change your behaviours. Each session will see you learn a new CBT skill (e.g. how to manage emotional eating). You will create response cards, and strategize "When this skill will be most difficult to implement" and how to succeed under the most difficult of circumstances.

Five Years of CBT-Based Success

MODA Support

Tony Vassallo manages the MODA Group Program that has seen hundreds of successful clients over five years. The program is founded on Nine Pillars that support many CBT principles. Such principles include: Self-monitoring; Goal setting; Action planning; Reinforcement management; Social comparisons; and Cognitive restructuring. These techniques increase: Adherence; Self-efficacy; and Intrinsic motivation.



The MODA group is an energetic and supportive environment for anyone who wants group support to manage their weight. Weekly group sessions provide nutrition information and reinforcement of your own values and weight loss goals.

This program is perfect for those who want psycho-education and proven CBT support.

Psychological Weight and Eating Issues

Please fill-in the information below and we will schedule an assessment for you. An assessment is conducted with our Psychologist, and lasts anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes.


All assessments are covered under extended healthcare insurance.

Once the assessment is complete, you will talk with the psychologist and shift to create a treatment program that is right for you. It could include individual therapy (schedule to be determined), group therapy, group support or attendance at Shift workshops.
